What are some potential research topics in molecular biology for students?

The field is vast, and I want to choose a project that is both novel and feasible for a thesis or first publication. I’m looking for areas with active questions and accessible techniques to build a strong foundation.

Based on where the field is moving, I would recommend a few accessible avenues. First, applied CRISPR diagnostics like developing SHERLOCK-based assays for pathogens is very hot and teachable. Secondly, the entire world of non-coding RNAs and their roles in disease offers countless specific questions. For a more engineering angle, start with basic modular protein design or a small synthetic gene circuit. I have seen students thrive by picking a focused tool and applying it to a clear, small-scale biological question.
