What are promising mathematics research topics in undeveloped countries?

I advise graduate students in regions with limited traditional research infrastructure but abundant, complex local problems. We want to do world-class math that also has direct societal impact. The challenge is identifying topics that are tractable without massive supercomputers, address real needs like agriculture or public health, and can build a sustainable research ecosystem here.

I have consulted on this exact issue. I strongly recommend focusing on applied fields where local data and problems provide a unique advantage. Excellent directions include: 1) Mathematical Epidemiology: Modeling disease spread with local mobility data. 2) Agricultural Optimization: Using statistical design for crop yields or resource allocation. 3) Educational Mathematics: Researching pedagogy for low-resource classrooms. These areas use accessible tools, solve pressing issues, attract local funding, and build a community of practice that is both globally connected and locally essential.
