The "Mussel Watch" method effect on ecosystem

I've heard scientists use mussels to monitor ecosystem health ("Mussel Watch"). Is this a reliable, stand-alone method, or just one piece of the puzzle?

It's a brilliant but specific tool. Mussels are fantastic natural filters; they accumulate pollutants from water over time, giving scientists a time-averaged "report card" on chemicals like heavy metals. This makes them highly reliable for tracking specific pollution trends. However, they can't tell you about overall biodiversity, habitat quality, or ecosystem functions like nutrient cycling. So, it's an essential component of a monitoring toolkit, but not a comprehensive health check—you need to look at the whole picture.
