Sociology amid climate breakdown: What does systemic pedagogical transformation really involve?

There are increasing calls for pedagogical change in sociology due to climate crises.Yet “transformation” is often left vague or symbolic.I’m seeking clarity on what systemic change looks like in practice.

From my experience, systemic pedagogical transformation goes far beyond adding climate readings. I have seen meaningful change when departments rework assessment, collaboration, and temporal assumptions about progress. I would recommend integrating uncertainty, interdisciplinarity, and emotional literacy into teaching. Climate breakdown challenges sociology to teach students how to think with instability, rather than analyze it from a safe conceptual distance.
