Is it better for society if AI remains a powerful tool, or should we strive to develop human-like general intelligence?

The more beneficial path is to develop AI as a super-efficient tool rather than replicating full human similarity. Human-like AI (AGI) raises immense ethical, safety, and control challenges. In contrast, specialized "tool AI" can surpass human ability in specific domains (data analysis, automation) without the risks of consciousness or misaligned general goals. This approach maximizes benefit by augmenting human work, boosting productivity, and solving complex problems. While understanding human cognition informs better design, the end goal should be creating reliable, transparent, and controllable partners, not synthetic humans, to address real-world needs safely and effectively.
