In our post‑colonial, globalized world, can Rostow’s modernization theory—with its Western‑centric trajectory—still be meaningfully applied to contemporary contexts?

My research critiques enduring Western paradigms in development. Rostow is a prime target, yet I need a precise argument: is his theory completely inapplicable now, or are there specific contexts (e.g., certain East Asian economies) where a modified version of its logic seemingly played out? I need to engage with this nuance, not just dismiss it outright. Does the theory retain any heuristic value for analyzing early?stage industrialization, or is it irredeemably compromised by its Eurocentrism?

Its direct applicability is null, but its provocative value is high. The theory is fundamentally compromised by its Eurocentrism and assumption of a singular, replicable path. In my comparative work, I’ve seen that while some East Asian economies displayed Rostovian?like “take?offs,” they did so through distinct, state?led models that defy his stages. Today, the theory is most useful as a foil. It forces us to articulate better frameworks: why didn’t most countries follow his path? This leads to richer discussions on geopolitical integration, the role of the developmental state, and technological leapfrogging. We use Rostow to understand what we’ve moved beyond.
