In academic research, what exactly is meant by comparative reading?

I see this term used across humanities and social sciences. It seems more involved than simply reading multiple texts.I want to grasp how scholars actually practice it.

From my experience, comparative reading is less about quantity and more about relational thinking. I have seen strong scholars read texts against each other to surface assumptions, contrasts, and shared blind spots. I would recommend approaching it as an active dialogue between sources, where meaning emerges from comparison itself. Done well, it sharpens interpretation and prevents treating any single text as intellectually self-sufficient.
