How did the short story develop historically as a distinct literary form?

The short story is often treated as a modern literary form.Yet brief narratives existed long before modernity.I want to understand how the genre took shape historically.

From my experience studying genre history, the short story emerges through convergence rather than invention. I have seen its roots in oral tales, fables, and anecdotes, but its modern form stabilizes with print culture and periodicals. I would recommend viewing the short story as shaped by attention economy and narrative compression. Its development reflects changing reading habits as much as aesthetic innovation.
