How can the background of a study be clearly distinguished from the literature review?
Many theses blur the line between background and literature review. This creates structural and evaluative confusion.I want to understand how each section should function distinctly.

From my experience supervising theses, the key distinction is purpose rather than content. I have seen strong backgrounds establish context, motivation, and the problem space, while literature reviews evaluate existing scholarship. I would recommend asking whether a paragraph explains why the study matters or what others have already argued. Keeping that distinction in mind helps maintain clarity and strengthens the overall research narrative.
