How are the 24 books of The Odyssey structured and why are they named that way?
The Odyssey is divided into 24 books, but these divisions feel uneven.I want to understand whether this structure originates with Homer or later editors.Clarifying this would help my reading and teaching of the epic.

From my experience teaching classical epics, the 24-book division reflects later scholarly organization rather than Homer’s original design. I have seen evidence pointing to Alexandrian editors who imposed this structure for reference and teaching. I would recommend understanding the books as navigational units, not narrative acts. The naming follows the Greek alphabet and helps manage an oral-derived text that was later fixed in written form.
