From a mobile robot’s perspective, what is the core difference between an Indoor Positioning System (IPS) and Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM)?

How does a mobile robot's role in using an IPS fundamentally differ from its role in performing SLAM?

IPS requires a pre-installed external infrastructure (like UWB anchors or WiFi nodes) to provide absolute coordinates to the robot; it's a localization service in a known map of beacons. SLAM is a self-contained process where the robot uses its own sensors to simultaneously build a map of an unknown environment and locate itself within it, requiring no prior infrastructure or map.
