Does your jurisdiction’s copyright law prohibit multiple collecting societies (CMOs) for one class of works?

In my country, is it legally allowed to have more than one copyright collecting society for the same category of works, or does the law usually support a single monopoly CMO?

It really depends on the jurisdiction. Some countries allow a monopoly CMO if regulators believe the existing society is functioning adequately—for example, Nigeria’s copyright law permits this under certain conditions. In contrast, many EU jurisdictions, influenced by competition law principles, allow multiple CMOs for the same class of works. The idea is to prevent abuse of monopoly power and encourage better efficiency, transparency, and services for rights holders through competition.
