Does islamic law actually mandate peaceful coexistence with non-muslims?

We hear a lot about Islamic law and conflict. But is there textual and historical evidence for peaceful coexistence with non-Muslims?

Absolutely. The Quran (60:8-9) explicitly commands kindness and justice to non-Muslims who do not fight you. The Constitution of Medina the Prophet's own governance document established a plural, multi-religious community with mutual obligations. The classical dhimmi system, whatever its historical flaws, was a formal legal framework granting Christians and Jews protected status, religious autonomy, and security in exchange for tribute. These aren't apologetics; they're primary sources. Coexistence isn't a modern revision it's in the foundational texts.
