Critically evaluate the role of theory in thematic analysis. Does it come at the beginning (deductive), the end (interpretation), or is it an ongoing dialog?

I'm grappling with the practical placement of theory in my analysis. Textbooks often present deductive and inductive as clear binaries, but my experience feels messier. I'm seeking clarity on how expert researchers genuinely engage with theory to enrich their analysis without forcing the data into a preconceived mold.

In my practice, I've seen treating theory as a rigid starting point often blind researchers to what's novel in their data. Conversely, pretending theory only appears at the end is rarely honest. I recommend an ongoing dialog. Start with your theoretical sensibilities openly on the table they shape your questions. Then, actively bracket them during initial coding to listen to the data. The real craft begins when you bring theory back in to interrogate the emerging themes: "What does Theory X help me see here? Where does my data challenge it?" This back-and-forth builds analytically powerful themes that are both data-grounded and conceptually significant. (113 words.)
