Are there references on different kinds of languages in written mathematical tasks?

In my research on mathematical communication, I'm analyzing student responses. I need a theoretical framework to categorize the interplay between natural language, symbolic notation, graphs, and diagrams in written work. Foundational papers or key authors in this area would be immensely helpful.

This is a crucial area for understanding comprehension. I would recommend starting with the seminal work of researchers like Raymond Duval, who provides a robust semiotic framework distinguishing between treatment (manipulating within one system) and conversion (moving between systems, like graph to equation). Also, search for literature on "multi-modal representation" or "register theory" in mathematics education. These references will give you a structured way to analyze how students navigate and sometimes get stuck translating between the verbal, symbolic, and visual "languages" of a single problem.
